ASTHO Profile of State Public Health

The ASTHO Profile of State Public Health (Profile) is the only comprehensive source of information about state public health agency activities, structure, and resources. First published in 2007, the Profile aims to define the scope of state public health services, identify variations in practice among state public health agencies, and contribute to the development of best practices in governmental public health. The Profile reports highlight descriptive findings from each survey round.

Information on governance, finance, workforce, and public health activities are available for further research on local health departments.

Medicare Claims Data as Public Use Files: A New Tool for Public Health Surveillance

Abstract: Claims data are an important source of data for public health surveillance but have not been widely used in the United States because of concern with personally identifiable health information and other issues. We describe the development and availability of a new set of public use files created using de-identified health care claims for fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries, including individuals 65 years and older and individuals with disabilities younger than 65 years, and their application as tools for public health surveillance.

The database includes brief descriptions of research resources and links to PubMed. It also includes URLs of providers for additional information or access to the resources.

Each dataset is accompanied by a protocol and a codebook. The protocols describe the method for creating the datasets allowing both replication and updating. The codebooks describe the variables in a dataset.
