Ross Brownson serves as Professor of Epidemiology with a joint assignment in the College of Medicine (Siteman Cancer Center) and the School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. He earned his doctoral degree from Colorado State University. Dr. Brownson co-directs the St. Louis Prevention Research Center,—a major, CDC funded center jointly led by Washington University and Saint Louis University – that develops innovative approaches to chronic

disease prevention in high risk communities.

 

Dr. Brownson has an interest in the impact of environmental and policy interventions on

health behaviors, and brings extensive experience in the design, implementation, and

evaluation of interventions; implementation of large population-based surveys;

implementation research; and translation of science into public health practice. He is a

leading expert in chronic disease prevention; an expert in the area of applied epidemiology; and regarded as one of the great intellectual, educational, and practice leaders in the field of evidence-based public health. His research has focused on tobacco use prevention, promotion of physical activity, the evaluation of community-level interventions, and dissemination of evidence-based interventions.

 

Dr. Brownson is a board member of the American College of Epidemiology, and a former founding member of the CDC Task Force developing the Guide to Community Preventive Services. He has been a member of three Institutes of Medicine Committees addressing prevention of obesity. He is an associate editor of the Annual Review of Public Health, and on the editorial board of five other journals. Dr. Brownson has authored and published over 240 peer reviewed articles. He is the editor or author of the books: Chronic Disease Epidemiology and Control, Applied Epidemiology, Evidence-Based Public Health, and Community-Based Prevention.
