PHSSR Research Agenda

The National Coordinating Center for Public Health Services & Systems Research (PHSSR) worked with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Altarum Institute, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on developing the National Agenda for setting the new PHSSR research agenda.

COVERAGE OF THE AGENDA IN
THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE
SCHEDULED FOR SPRING 2012

The American Journal of Preventive Medicine PHSSR special journal supplement represents the culminating efforts of more than a year’s worth of effort to develop a new research agenda for PHSSR. The special supplement will include contributions from several prominent public health organizations and will also reflect the efforts of public health researchers and practitioners from around the country. Included in this supplement are written works that detail the history of PHSSR, and past endeavors to better understand the public health system. In addition to these historical accounts, five systematic reviews are included, each covering a specific area that is integral to the public health system. More specifically, these reviews focus on the areas of public health workforce, quality improvement, the organization and structure of public health agencies, and the methodologies utilized in PHSSR. The observations noted within these systematic reviews, in conjunction with past efforts in PHSSR, helped guide the creation of the new PHSSR research agenda featured in this special supplement. The development of this agenda solidifies the commitment of several PHSSR stakeholders to the development of this field of study. Greater detail regarding the agenda and its role in furthering both public health research as well as improving the health of communities is captured in pieces authored by senior members of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Without collaboration and leadership from the CDC, the RWJF, and the National Coordinating Center for PHSSR, the development and publication of this agenda would not have been possible.
