Center for Public Health Systems & Services Research (CPHSSR)
Gains National Prominence

National Recognition at ASTHO-NACCHO
Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, highlighted the new Center for PHSSR in a speech to the fifth joint conference of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), held in Sacramento, CA last week. (To view Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey's speech, please click here.)

Pleased with the attention to PHSSR, Dr. Scutchfield added, "The establishment of PHSSR will allow public health researchers, practitioners and policymakers across the country to collaborate and coordinate activities in a way that would not have been conceivable a few decades ago. Creation of a online community where those interested in affecting change in public health policy and practice can exchange information and ideas in real-time will become a tremendous asset to the health of our nation."

Funding &
Mini-Grantees

Each month in our InsideTrack  e-Newsletter, we will focus on one of our Grantees.  Currently, we have two groups of researchers and have issued a Call for Proposals to be submitted by January 2009.

PATRICK BERNET, Ph.D., M.P.A.

Dr. Bernet has finished data collection for a follow-up study based on his
already completed minigrant.  He is extending the inventory of public health finance courses to include a broader range of universities.  He will be submitting this work for publication shortly.

He is also working on regionalization studies in Kansas & Massachusetts, exploring the ways in which financial incentives might be used.

Lastly, Dr Bernet is Co-PI on research aimed at evaluating public health
funding formulas.  Among other things, this work will provide policy analyst with a set of tools with which they can measure the impact of changes to funding formulas.

His presentation at the 2008 Keeneland Conference is also available for downloading.

We appreciate our mini-grantees and look forward to implementing our new Grantmaking Online (GO) system in late October 2008!
